Transforming Healthcare Delivery with Lean
Whatever uncertainties surround healthcare reform, radical change is going to be needed for providers not just to survive but thrive in the new environment. Lean is a proven strategy for hospitals looking to transform how they deliver care.
Drawing on his extensive experience of helping hospital leadership apply process excellence, Mr. Lefteroff will demonstrate the profound effect Lean can have across an organization. He will review the dramatic improvements Lean achieves in operational and financial performance, as well as its impact on staff, physician, and patient satisfaction. He will also discuss the critical role of leadership in establishing a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring the successful implementation of Lean for long-term success.

PEER-TO-PEER PRESENTATIONS: Putting Lean into Practice
Our Lean Journey An Administrator’s Perspective
The Joint Commission has awarded the Gold Seal of Approval to Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. It has also achieved Disease-Specific Care Certification from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in the areas of cancer services, acute coronary syndrome and outpatient diabetes care.
In 2008, Baptist Medical Center set its entire organization on a Lean path. Starting in the Pharmacy Department, continuing to Admissions, and then to General Surgery, Lean methodology has yielded over $700k in annual savings. It has also sparked a new culture of continuous improvement. Ms. Amis will share highlights of the Lean journey from an administrator’s perspective including motivations for implementing Lean, ROI and the role of leadership in promoting and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement.

WORKSHOP B:
Lean Maturity Model: Roadmap and Assessment Tool
A Lean journey proceeds through several distinct levels, beginning with Stabilization and proceeding through Standardization, which empowers your organization with an integrated and sustainable improvement model. As employees develop a deeper understanding of Lean philosophies and practices, your organization can deploy new methodologies to achieve its next level of continuous improvement.
In this session, you will learn about a Lean Maturity Model and how to assess your current level on the maturity continuum. This model will serve as a roadmap that will propel your organization forward toward operational excellence.
WORKSHOP C:
A3 Problem-Solving Tool
There are many tools available for Lean Managers to use to improve a process. But oftentimes it is difficult to select the appropriate one because the issue is not clearly defined. This leaves managers asking, “What tool is the most appropriate? How do I communicate the need for this process change?”
This interactive workshop addresses these questions and teaches the participant how to fully utilize A3 in their Lean journey. Participants should come prepared to discuss a specific process issue they are trying to solve. Specific workshop objectives are:
- Understand the role of A3 in the Lean journey
- Understand the different applications of A3 in an organization
- Complete an A3 Report
WORKSHOP D:
5S Your First Steps to Recovering Space and Eliminating Waste
Disorganization and clutter are major impediments to a smooth process flow. 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain) is a simple but highly effective Lean tool for creating a visual work environment that leads to better workplace organization, more efficient use of space, and general cleanliness. Unfortunately, many organizations apply the first three “S’s” only, ignoring the importance of Standardize and Sustain. As a result, they fail to achieve the full benefits of this tool. This workshop will review the importance of each “S” and provide strategies for implementing all five components for optimal results.
